Paying For College - Your Financial Aid Options
Paying for college tuition, fees, books, and other associated costs can be a main obstacle in your path to a college degree. Yet, cost does not have to keep you from starting or restarting college and earning a degree. Many financing options are available. Some employers offer tuition reimbursement plans and most CALL member colleges and universities offer semester or term payment plans. If you served in the military or are a military spouse or dependent, you may be eligible for benefits. Finally, federal financial aid is available in the form of grants and loans.
After you select your institution of choice, your next most important step is to learn what types of federal financial aid you are eligible to receive. The only way to learn if you qualify for a federal grant or loan is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov . Many adult learners make the mistake of not determining what they are eligible to receive by choosing not to complete the FAFSA. You will need your income tax returns from the previous year to complete the FAFSA. The best advice is to complete the FAFSA early and at least learn your eligibility for funding options. You are not obligated to accept any grants or loans if you do not want to do so. Determining eligibility differs from accepting or receiving a financial aid reward.
Some of the most affordable tuition rates in the country are one of the many benefits of earning your degree from a public college or university in the state of Louisiana. Financial aid programs can cover much of the cost, but you have to become eligible. There are many types of financial aid for which you may qualify including grant and scholarships (which you generally do not pay back) and loans (which you do pay back with low interest rates).
